Saint James Lutheran Church

Saint James is located at 7400 W. Foster Avenue, Chicaog, IL 60656 just west of the Harlem Foster Shopping Plaza behind the Jewel Food Store.  We share this campus with the Chicago Chin Baptist Church and our offices are located in the lower level upon entry from the parking lot.

Saint James also shares space with Shepherd’s Heart at their Gunnison Street campus and some of our activities are held there.

We presently are celebrating weekly Sunday Mass at Shepherd’s Heart each Sunday at 10 AM.  The liturgy is video recorded and available on Facebook on Mondays.

Saint James is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is located on the NW side of Chicago.  Saint James  is noted for creative, but traditional liturgy, a quality concert series, a regionally acclaimed Performing Arts Academy for both  youth and adults, and a loving passion for servant ministry.   The people of Saint James  support two local food pantries (Saint Cyprian’s and New Hope) and supply meals, hygiene kits, and pastoral counseling  for “The Night Ministry” that  feeds and cares for the  Chicago homeless, both adults and youth.  We also support mission projects that extends love globally, including Compassion International.

We welcome all persons into our fold as visitors and members, with a special emphasis on the marginalized and those who identify as LGTBQIA+.   We are a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Parish.

Statement of Welcome

We, the congregation of Saint James Lutheran Church proclaim the message that the Grace of our Lord is infinitely inclusive and that everyone is welcome through our doors. We believe that Christ calls us to reconciliation and wholeness in a world of alienation and brokenness.

As disciples of Christ seeking justice and reconciliation among all peoples, we at Saint James Church welcome all into the fullness of God’s love and grace. God welcomes all and so we also welcome all regardless of race or culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or relationship status. We welcome all without regard to addictions, physical or mental health, imprisonment, socio-economic circumstances, or anything that too often divides us. Our unity is in Christ.

We recognize that each person is a unique creation of God and, through Grace, is called a child of God.

All are welcome at Saint James Church and embraced by God’s love.

All are welcome to worship, to hear the Good News, to receive the sacraments, and to share in fellowship and service. All members of Saint James   pledge  ourselves and our parish community to exercise our faith in Christ, treasuring one another’s similarities while embracing our God-given differences. We pledge to ourselves and to all others that we will strive to live as a reconciling people, in our life together and in our outreach to the world.

The Music Ministry of Saint James Lutheran Church unites the body of believers in corporate worship. Participants in music ministry are given the opportunity to use their gifts to glorify God and encourage others through music. This ministry facilitates the building of relationships through participation in musical activities and nurtures the gift of music in all phases of congregational life.

Liturgical Choir

The Liturgical Choir (SATB) assists in worship leadership each Sunday at Mass and at weekly feast days, solemnities, and other commemorations.    All confirmed members and friends of the congregation who read music  are invited to sing with the Liturgical Choir.  Rehearsals are held Monday evenings from 7:45 – 9:45 pm in the lower level classroom number 1.

Bell Choir

The St James Bell Choir assists with Sunday and Feast Day worship throughout the liturgical year.  Currently we rehearse 4 times before a scheduled liturgy.  Please contact the parish office to inquire about this schedule.  One must be a music reader to participate.

Saint James Festival Choir

The Festival Choir participates in festival liturgies and presents special concerts and musicals during the year.  Made up of members, guests, and friends of the congregation, the choir rehearses as needed to prepare for a particular occasion.  Call the parish office for more information.

Performing Arts Academy

The PAA including the summer week long camp for youth and the week long adult pipe organ class are held traditionally near the end of June.  The PAA provides on-going programing for youth in the performing arts of dance, drama, voice, and choral activities. In recent years we’ve added European Style Fencing to our programming to help develop poise, confidence, concentration skills.  In the traditional areas, the PAA places emphasis on vocal technique, dance, drama skills, and strong focus in performance. Our PAA partners with the Weber Performing Arts Academy in providing the most qualified instructors, teachers, and coaches, many who are known nationally and internationally.   Currently there are over 100 youth and adults who participate in the PAA.

Concert Series

Each year, Saint James hosts a concert series of 5 – 11 programs featuring Chicago area, regional, and national performers.  Over the years, we’ve also included international performing artists with globally acclaimed recognition.   Now in it’s 15th year, we continue to seek sponsors and patrons to keep the Concert series fresh and vibrant.  The Chicago Bach Chamber Choir (formerly of Rockford) now in their 38th season, is based at Saint James Church and continues under the artistic direction of Ronald Weber.  They appear on the Saint James Concert Series and may be contracted to perform at other public and private events in the Chicago and Northern Illinois/ Southern Wisconsin area.
