Samhain Liturgy

I wanted to share a wonderful liturgy resource from the Celtic Catholic Church, Diocese of Saint Brendan. We have used these prayers for years now in our annual liturgical celebration of All Hallows’ Eve within Shepherd’s Heart. May you find them as meaningful and beautiful as we do.

The following prayers et cetera are designed to be utilized within the regular Liturgy of the Mass on Samhain. For those of you who will not be celebrating the mass I would invite you to follow along as appropriate and perhaps at least participate in the Prayers of the People with your evening prayers. Blessings and Happy New Year everybody! (For those perhaps not familiar, Samhain marks the beginning of the Celtic New Year!)

Samhain Liturgy

Introit

Those who keep my covenant
I will bring to my holy mountain
and make them joyful in my house of prayer. Is. 56:7
Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous;
it is good for the just to sing praises. Ps. 33:1
Glory be. . . . Those who keep my covenant. . . .

Prayers of the People

O Lord, in your mercy forgive our iniquities: spare us, good Lord, deliver your people, whom you have redeemed with your own precious Blood.
Good Lord, deliver us.

From temptation and sin, from all assaults of the devil, from hell-fire and damnation,
Good Lord, deliver us.

From pride, anger, and covetousness; from lust, envy, sloth, and gluttony.
Good Lord, deliver us.

From the snares of the world, the flesh, and the devil.
Good Lord, deliver us.

At the hour of our death and judgement, into heaven, out of hell,
Good Lord, deliver us.

From lightning, tempest, and earthquake,
Good Lord, deliver us.

From plague, pestilence, and famine;
Good Lord, deliver us.

From flood and fire,
Good Lord, deliver us.

From battle and murder,
Good Lord, deliver us.

From dying suddenly and unprepared,
Good Lord, deliver us.

From unseen and unknown dangers that would harm us,
Good Lord, deliver us.

From heresy and false doctrine, from the broad and easy way that leads to perdition, from hardness of heart and slowness to love and serve,
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your holy Nativity, and by your Circumcision,
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your Epiphany to the Gentiles, and by your Baptism,
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your agony and bloody sweat, by your betrayal and arrest, and by your Cross and death,
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your descent into hell, by your holy Resurrection, and by your glorious Ascension into heaven,
Good Lord, deliver us.

By your coming again at the end of the ages,
Good Lord, deliver us.

By the intercessions of all your saints, by the prayers of Holy Mary, saints Joseph the foster-father, Michael the archangel, John the Paranymphos, Philip the Apostle, Joseph of Arimathea, Mellangel, the blessed Aelhaiarn, Cadfan, Clydai, Clydwyn, Cynddilig, Dingad, Dona, the five Dyfrwry, Gwen, Gwynno, Gwynnoro, Celynin, Ceitho, Gwenfyl, Callwen, Gwynlleu, Rhwydrys, Morhaiarn, and Peulan, have mercy on us and save us.
Good Lord, deliver us.

We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That you would give us a heart to love and serve you, living according to your commands,
We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That you would give your people grace to hear and receive your word, and not to hear it only but to do it, bringing forth fruit worthy of the Spirit,
We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That you would bring back to the way of truth all who have strayed, and bring to salvation those who have not known you,
We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That we may be truly welcoming stewards of the House of your Mysteries, attracting many and driving away none,
We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That you would bless our Abbot .N. with true godliness and spiritual wisdom,
We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That you would send laborers into the harvest, and draw the world into your Kingdom,

We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please you to help all members of your Church to be, always and everywhere, Christ’s body on earth, light for the world, the leaven of sincerity and truth,
We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That you would grant us grace to revive and renew our baptismal covenant, being true to that covenant wherever we may be,
We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That you would grant seasonable weather and abundant harvests,
We beseech you to hear us, good Lord.

That you would summon forth from the ground the fruits of the earth, that all peoples may enjoy your bounty,

We ask you to hear our prayer, O Lord:
And especially for all in any need,
Hear our prayer, O Lord.

For prisoners, and those in chains or exile,
Hear our prayer, O Lord.

For refugees and wanderers, for the homeless and the hungry,
Hear our prayer, O Lord.

For all who are in sorrow, trouble, need, sickness, or any other adversity,
Hear our prayer, O Lord.

For those who are persecuted for the cause of right and the Name of Christ, for all who are imprisoned and tortured for the sake of conscience, and for all innocent victims,
Hear our prayer, O Lord.

For virgins, widows, and orphans, and for those who have no one to plead their cause,
Hear our prayer, O Lord.

For those who stumble and fall; for those who weep and mourn; for those who despair and have no hope;
Hear our prayer, O Lord.

For those who have gone before us in the sign of faith;
Hear our prayer, O Lord.

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord;
And let light perpetual shine upon them.
+ May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercies of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

Help us, save us, have mercy, and keep us, O God, by your grace.
Amen.

O God, whose nature and property is always to have mercy and to forgive: Receive our humble petitions, and though we be tied and bound with the chain of our sins, yet let your great mercy free us. Spare all who confess their sins to you, bestowing upon them both pardon and peace.
Amen.

Almighty and Everlasting God, have mercy upon your servant, .N., our Abbot, and according to your great goodness direct him into the way of everlasting salvation; that by your grace he may desire those things which are pleasing to you, and with all his strength do them; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth, whose Son and true Word our Lord Jesus Christ tore the veil between this physical creation and your heavenly kingdom, by entering our world as a human child, by dying on the cross, and by descending to hell and opening from there a gate to Heaven: Hear our prayers at this holy time, and grant that, as we begin a new year of grace, we may always walk between the worlds, with one foot here and one foot there, one eye now and one eye then; so that, when our bodies dissolve back to dust from which they were made, we may enter into your land of eternal joys which we will already know; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Collect

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting.
Amen.

Propers

Gradual

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth be moved,
and though the mountains topple into the depths of the sea. Ps. 46:1,2
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Preface
For in the multitude of your saints, you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and together with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away.

Memorial
Countless throngs of saints and angels stand before your throne day and night, constantly proclaiming your praise, and offering through your Son their prayers for those of us in your Church here on earth.

Post-Communion
Grant, O Lord, that this year, begun in you, may find its meaning and completion in you, and that all our years may end in glory, when your Son returns to take us home; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
